Here’s a story I wrote for a flash fiction challenge.

Flash Fiction

I took inspiration from Kassidy, the main character of my paranormal/urban fantasy novel they All Died Smiling, which is available on Audible audio and in all ebook formats and print.

Craft Fair

I closed the trunk on its load of handmade home decor. “I should dig out the skates.”

“Skates? Why?”

“So you can tow me behind all these crafts. Or did you leave room for me to ride inside the car?”

Aunt Beck grinned at me. “It’s a lot. But there’s still a little space for you.”

I scanned the interior. “Are the Etsy orders we packed up last night in the car?”

“Yikes, no, please grab the sack on the table.”

I hugged her. “I’m so proud of you.”

“Thanks, Kass..” A tear welled. “This is all because of you.”

Old School Millennial

Hi! Take a break from and PANICdemic and enjoy a short read. This one’s for Rochelle Wisoff-Fields’ Friday Fictioneers Blog Challenge for 27 March, based on a photo writing prompt.

This one features Kassidy and Julie from my paranormal novel They All Died Smiling plus Kass’ aunt and cousins, who are mentioned but don’t appear. This is a mundane…er…mainstream story from the world of a paranormal book. I’m calling it historical fiction of the 1990s.

If you’d like to read my books, you can find them anywhere you get your reads, or on my Amazon author page.

The Photo Prompt

PHOTO PROMPT © Jeff Arnold

Description (For my visually impaired/blind friends): What I see in this photo is an antique typewriter.

The Inspiration

The photo of an old typewriter made me think of learning to type in 6th grade. My character Kassidy grew up in a rural area in an old-school manner, even though she’s a millennial. She never had a computer until high school classes. She learned how to type, do shorthand, sew, and more all from her Aunt Beck.

The Story: Old School Millennial

by Ronda Del Boccio

Word Count: 100 words

Genre: Historical Fiction from the 1990s

I showed Julie some family photos. In one, Aunt Beck sat with a belly full of unborn baby and a toddler on her knee.

“OMG, that antique typewriter,” Julie exclaimed. “I wouldn’t even know how to type on it.”

“You had to push, but otherwise, it’s like a computer with no function keys.”

Julie rolled her eyes. “I know what one is, Kass, but how did people ever manage to type like that? What happened when you made a mistake?”

“White-Out or correction tape.”

“Of course, you’ve used one.”

“That’s the same machine on which she taught me to type.”

Description: For the benefit of my blind or visually impaired readers, near as I can tell, this week’s picture shows a stone fountain on a cemented area with benches behind it, then tress and grass beyond.

The Inspiration

I figure these stories are a great way to share characters from my paranormal novel and maybe get you curious enough to buy a copy. Can’t blame a writer for book marketing. Nobody else does it for us! So you’ll meet Kassidy, the Reluctant Demon Hunter herself, when she is about to discover that one of her escapades has gone viral.

You can get They All Died Smiling in print, ebook and Audible Audiobook wherever you get your books. Just ask for it by name.

The Story: Paranormal Caught on Camera: Reluctant Demon Hunter Edition | Flash Fiction Featuring Kassidy Spence from They All Died Smiling

“Go on out to the party, Kass. Everything’s ready here.”

“You sure?”

Aunt Beck shooed me. “Go on. Git.”

“I’d rather–”

One hand on her hip and the other pointing at the door, Aunt Beck dismissed me.

Sighing, I left for the festivities.

A group of girls danced around the fountain.

Whispering caught my ear “It’s her from the video.” The bundled woman shoulder-pointed at me.

I looked around. She’s pointing at me.

Her friend stage-whispered, “She saved our church from that demon.”

Dancing stopped. People turned and stared.

Kill me now. I waved. “Uh…hi.” Wait…VIDEO?

All the Things You Haven’t Done | Flash Fiction Featuring Characters from My Paranormal Novel They All Died Smiling

Flash Fiction

Welcome back to another magical story! This one’s for the Friday Fictioneers blog writing challenge for 6 March 2020 hosted by my friend Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. She’s an A-MA-ZING author and artist who hosts this weekly opportunity to create a 100-word story and share it.

Flash Fiction

The Inspiration

Why not use characters from my novel, right??? You meet roommates Julie and Kassidy from They All Died Smiling, my paranormal novel, which is available on Audible Audio and in print and ebook formats everywhere you get your books. Country-raised Kassidy is the reluctant demon hunter who has a power that has only brought her to grief in the past. In the novel, she faces challenges that make her decide she has to use her gift, like it or not. Julie is her city-born roommate who ends up setting off the actions of the first book. In the sequel, she’ll be at the heart of trouble for sure.

The Story: “All the Things You Haven’t Done” Featuring characters from my paranormal novel  They All Died Smiling

Genre: Mainstream using characters from a supernatural book

Word Count: 100

“Kass, I can’t believe all the things you haven’t done,” Julie threw a piece of popcorn at me. I caught it in air.

“You mean all the city things.”

“But they’re so ordinary.”

I rolled my eyes. “Have you ever eaten a tomato right off the vine?”

“Eew, without washing it?”

I nodded. “Have you ever ridden a tractor?”

“No.”

“Have you ever eaten food you planted and grew with your own hands?”

“No.”

“Ever watched a sunset behind rolling hills?”

“No. Sounds pretty.”

“Those experiences are just as ordinary to me as your escalators and skyscrapers are to you.”

Flaming Demon | Paranormal/Supernatural Flash Fiction Story

Welcome back for another flash fiction story based on the Friday Fictioneers photo writing prompt for 14 February 2020. This time, not only did I borrow characters from my paranormal book, but I also wrote a paranormal story.

Flash Fiction

The Photo

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

The Inspiration

In the unpublished sequel to They All Died Smiling, available in all formats everywhere, Kassidy Spence and an FBI agent race from Chicago to New York on an intended rescue.

Covers of They All Died Smiling in ebook, print, and audiobook formats, available at Amazon or your favorite fine retailer

The Paranormal/Supernatural Story: Flaming Demon

As snow swirled down, I watched the rhythmic swish-swish of the wipers. Soon, I’d lead the rescue of a demon-possessed, suicidal woman.

“Kass?”

I started.

“You okay? You’re all folded into yourself.”

“Fine as a fly in your eye.” I unfolded. Grow a spine, girl.

A green, snaggle-toothed demon jumped onto the hood. The agent nearly hit a pillar.

“You see them?”

He pounded the wheel. “I can’t kill them like you can.”

I pointed at it. “I’m sick of all y’all.” Blue flame shot from my finger. Screaming, It went up in etheric fire and vanished.

“Nice work, Kass.”

Flash Fiction: Big City Novelty, Featuring Kassidy and Julie from the Supernatural/Paranormal Novel They All DIed Smiling

Flash Fiction

Thanks for coming back for another flash fiction story based on the Friday Fictioneers 7 February 2020 photo prompt. Thanks to our hostess, the amazing Rochelle Wisoff-Fields, for hosting. If you’d like to try your hand at a story, please join the fun!.

Flash Fiction

The Photo Prompt

PHOTO PROMPT © Ulrika Undén

The Inspiration

This picture of an escalator made me think of two things simultaneously: my guide dog gazing at one like it was an amusement park ride she wasn’t allowed to board, and my character Kassidy from They All Died Smiling, who grew up in the country but moved to Chicago for her job at the newspaper. You city folk may find this hard to believe, but we don’t have escalators and indoor shopping malls in the country. Our malls are all outside entry through whatever weather, and you have to walk or drive to get to the various shops. They’re spread out at ground level, and you enter each store from an outside door. Kassidy grew up with struggling farmers and never had vacations where you get on a plane and go somewhere cool.

The Story: Big City Novelty

Word count: 100

Genre: Mundane but using Kassidy and Julie from the paranormal/supernatural adventure, They All Died Smiling, which is available in print, ebook, and audiobook everywhere.

Julie grabbed my arm. “Kass, your country bumpkin is showing.”

“Sorry.” I stumbled behind her, gaping at shoppers stepping on and off the escalators like it was as common as breathing, which it was to them.

“You’re gawking like yo9u’ve never seen an indoor mall before.”

“They don’t have those where I lived.”

She stopped. I bumped into her.

She grabbed my shoulders. “Are you serious?”

“Yes. We’re country folk.”

“I know, but…not even on vacation?”

“Nope. We only ever went to country bumpkin family.”

She smacked her forehead. “Oh. My. GAWD.”

“Be right back. I’m gonna ride that escalator.”

Aunt Bobby laid her arm across my shoulders. “Something’s on your mind, child.”

I’m twenty-six. “I just got a job offer.”

“And it involves your… special skills?”

“Nailed it, Aunt Beck.”

Bobby squeezed. “Your life is your masterpiece, Kass.”

“I don’t want to create an epic disaster.”

In my paranormal/urban fantasy novel They All Died Smiling, Kassidy is a war widow in her mid-twenties. Randy died in Afghanistan. That’s the first thing that came to mind when I saw the bus.

Word count: 100

Genre: Mainstream, involving Kassidy and her by-then-late husband Randy from my supernatural/paranormal novel They All Died Smiling, available everywhere.

Randy and I clung to each other. I felt proud of him for defending our country, I wondered if we’d ever see each other again and build our life as a couple.

The bus rolled up and wheezed to a stop.

“I know  you’ve been preparing for this since Civil Air Patrol in high school,” I said, my hand over his heart. “I just never thought you’d be going off to war so soon.”

He rested a hand over mine. “You’re always right here, Kass.” He laid his other hand on my heart.

Pondering Old Buildings: Flash Fiction

Flash Fiction

This is for Friday Fictioneers 15 Nov 2019. Huge thanks to Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for running this blog challenge! Writing flash fiction is probably the best thing I have ever done for my writing. It causes me to pack as much power into every word as possible. If you’d like to play, please do!

The Inspiration

I borrowed Kassidy and Robert from They All Died Smiling, my supernatural/ paranormal/ urban fantasy novel They All Died Smiling, available everywhere.

Covers of They All Died Smiling in ebook, print, and audiobook formats, available at Amazon or your favorite fine retailer

Kassidy Spence has a power that has only brought her pain and hardship, but if she doesn’t use it, more innocents will die. Her friend Robert SpiritFire is a Native American potter of great acclaim.

This is a mundane – um…mainstream – story.

Pondering Old Buildings

By Ronda Del Boccio

“The Rookery is the oldest building in Chicago,” the tour guide said. Ancient by USA standards, I compared it wiht the castles of Europe or mosques of Africa.

“I wonder how many pigeons have pooped on it,” Robert whispered.

I tried not to laugh. I really did. But I guess it’s like when something tickles your funny bone in church or any place you’re not supposed to bust a gut. Sometimes, you just can’t help it. My eyes watered. My nose ran, and finally, a burst of laughter barked its way out.

He grinned.

“Some friend you are! I teased.
