Alexa…How Do You Spell…?

I’m a really good speller overall, but sometimes I want to use a word that I haven’t seen in print before, or one I’m just not certain what that vowel is That’s what happened while writing the last story.

Hmmm…Do you spell it with an e or a u?…

So I asked my Amazon Echo, “How do you spell turd?”

“I’d rather not do that,” she replied.

“Well, tht was a shitty reply. It was a legit question.”

She made a “boop” sound at me and said no ore on the matter.

Appearing on Ozarks Today | Flash Fiction for Friday Fictioneers 22 Jan 2021

I'll PUsh You Steer by Ronda Del Boccio and Bonnie Tesh

Hello and welcome! I hope you enjoy this little slice of life for the Friday Fictioneers blog challenge for 22 january 2021

The Photo Writing Prompt

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

Description for my blind and visually impaired readers: This is a sidelines shot of a news team in front of the cameras.

The Inspiration.

My first thought was of being on TV with my co-author Bonnie Tesh to promote our book I’ll Push You Steer: The Definitive Guide to Stumbling through Life with Blinders on, currently available only on Kindle.

The Story: Appearing on Ozarks Today

I had to get up before God rolled over in bed, but the coming day was worth the early rise. Since neither of us co-authors nor my guide dog Molly could drive, my mom played chauffer on a frigid winter day.

While waiting our turn to appear on Ozarks Today, we observed the well-oiled machine of a news broadcast.

You might think that being on TV sharing our book represented the highlight of the day, but for me, it came in a close second.

Bonnie teased me for months about my squee at seeing our book front-facing on the shelf.

Breakfast at Shirley’s with Mom | Flash Fiction

Flash Fiction

Thanks for stopping by! I hope your week has been better than mine. Been a rough week here. There’s some problem with the water pipes, and we’ve been mostly without water all week, save for brief bursts to fill jugs, flush toilets, and shower every couple days. No fun. During a pandemic. Makes it challenging trying to keep sanitary.

Every time I turn around, I’m finding out about someone else I know coming down with Covid, and usually along with their whole family this week. It’s getting more and more scary out there. And a good friend had a massive heart attack.

So, how wonderful to enjoy a lovely breakfast out with Mom while she’s still here for us to enjoy each other.

Flash Fiction

This is a flash fiction story in 100 exactly 100 words for Friday Fictioneers 23 October 2020.

Description for my blind and visually impaired friends: It’s a diner. The photo shows part of a glass of water and a rack of sugar and other necessities on a checkered tablecloth. There’s a window with a view of a rainy day.

The Inspiration

I don’t get out much, but yesterday, Mom and I went to do our shopping and go to our favorite diner for breakfast.

The Story: Breakfast at Shirley’s with Mom

“I know you were happy to have access to indoor plumbing.”

Yes, can’t wait until the water is fixed.”

“But what took you so long?”

“When washing my hands, I noticed their sink was clogged, so I dug and pulled out God only knows what.”

“Ick.”

“Then I had to start the paper towel roll. The first sheet wouldn’t come off. I had to shred it. Looks like Twitch used it as a toy.”

The owner came by to say hi and ask about the food.

“Perfect pancake. Exceptional potatoes. Gorgeous, sunny day. Great to have breakfast with Mom.“

Description for my blind/visually impaired readers: This could be a couple of dancers in glowing light with indistinct features…or maybe it’s trapeze acts? Not sure. But you see a couple of glowing figures against a dark background, and they could be dancing or a circus act.

The Inspiration

A former dancer I know inspired this story.

The Story: Beyond the Footlights

Genre: Realistic fiction

Word count: 100

“Oh, I hurt,” Mom grips the handles of her rollator cart and shambles to the bedroom. She thinks we don’t know about her secret vodka stash.

But we do.

The whole family knows.

A thud. She’s down in the hall. Her husband and I drag her pathetic ass to bed.

“It’s every girl’s dream to pick her lush of a mother off the floor.”

Mom’s hot bod and skill once empowered her to dance on stages across North America. Now…

“She won’t see a doctor. What happens when she hurts herself?” Tony asks.

“She’ll have to live with the consequences.”.

Talking to the Dog: Friday Fictioneers Challenge

Description for my blind/visually impaired readers: This is a large, old house with a fence around it and trees.

The Inspiration:

My mind took me to my Aunt Bobby’s old house in Mound City, Missouri, where we would spend a few weeks over summer when I was a girl. She had a huge back dog named Jet who lived outside. I talked with him and other animals often. The hens let me pull eggs out from under them for our breakfast, and I thought it was magical to do this. I still did when I raised chickens of my own a few years back.

So…this is actually a memoir. Jet really did do what I attribute to hm in this story, and there really was a hen in trouble.

Genre: Memoir

Word count: 100

The Story: Talking to the Dog

“I’m coming,” I called, running to the back door.

Aunt Bobby shaped her pie crust. “What are you doing?”

“Jet says there’s a hen with her foot caught in the fence.”

She gave me that look all grown-up did when they thought I was playing let’s pretend. But the gigantic dog and I talked all the time. He met me at the door.

“Where?”

“Back corner.” His deep voice rumbled in my head.

“Easy, girl,” I assured the hen. Struggling and flapping, she pecked at me, but I got her foot free.

Aunt Bobby stood at the back door, watching.

Description for my blind/visually impaired friends: This image shows classy restaurant linen-covered tables set with fancy cloth napkins at the place settings. The tables are near a corner. Both sides feature large windows.

The Inspiration

When I was a kid, maybe 11, I won a prize from the radio. That was back in the “old days” of corded phones.

The Story: Dinner at the Pump Room

“Mom, do you want to go to the Pump Room if I win?”

She made a dismissive gesture. “You won’t win, but I don’t care about going there anyway.”

I’m pretty sure I’m going to win.

“I’ll invite Dad, then.” I turned the radio up for the announcement.

“The winner of dinner for two at the famous Pump Room is…Ronda Del…Box-ee-oh? Botch-ee-oh? From Chicago.”

I squealed and ran to the phone. “Hi, Dad. Guess what?”

“I just heard. You won the dinner.”

“I’m so excited.”

“Me too.”

I reveled in his enthusiasm.

“That means we’re going to the Pump Room!”

Notre Dame Burning

Flash Fiction

Thank you for coming to my blog for another flash fiction, or vey short story. This one is based on a photo prompt for Friday 24 April 2020. The challenge is to write a complete story of precisely 100 words.

Flash Fiction

The Photo

PHOTO PROMPT © C.E.Ayr

Description for my blind/visually impaired friends: I actually had to ask our hostess, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields, what in the world was in this one. I got a sense of decay, but that was about it. It’s a mutilated picture of Paris sitting against a wall over an oily-looking floor with a plastic tub and electrical outlet to either side.

The Inspiration

The Notre Dame fire.

The Story: Notre Dame Burning

Gazing at the glorious spire at Le Cathedral do Notre Dame, my heart thumped. Such a treat for anyone who loves to visit historic sites. Inside, I bypassed the kiosks where guests can hear about the building and history of the site in any of a hundred languages. I wanted to feel and experience it for myself.

Stepping into the sanctuary, I felt like a grain of sand on a beach. I heard the prayers of countless faithful and the voices of ten thousand choirs in my heart.

Then fire reduced to ash in minutes what took years to build.

Fancy Shawl Dance Battle

Thanks so much for coming by for a study break! This one will take your mind off the current corona craze for sure. It’s for Friday Fictioneers 10April 2020. Click the link to play along.

Flash Fiction

The Photo Prompt

PHOTO PROMPT © Jeff Arnold

The Inspiration

The rainbow made me think of Pow-Wow, which is a peaceful celebration amongst Native Americans at which all are welcome. I had a chance to dance Women’s Fancy Shawl at one in the spring almost three= decades ago in Colorado Springs. It turned into a dance battle with a highly unexpected conclusion.

The Story: Fancy Shawl Dance Battle

Genre: Memoir

Word count: 100

At pow-wow, all are welcome. I danced Fancy with a borrowed, beaded shawl

In a Native American style dance battle, Drummers beat faster and faster. Those who could not keep up stepped aside.

Playing along, I faced the drummers. Part of the game is stopping precisely on the last drumbeat. They faked intent to stop several times, fooling numerous dancers. I followed the energy.

At last, the frenzied beat stopped with a great cry, leaving the drummers and I panting. Cheers. which I assumed honored someone else, erupted.

When I looked around, I discovered I was the only dancer remaining.

In Honor of Molly |Weekend Writing Prompt 151 Keepsake

Hi, and thanks for reading! This piece may require a tissue if you’re a dog lover. It’s a bittersweet memory. This is for Sammi Scribbles Weekend Writing Prompt #151 Keepsake

The Writing Prompt: Keepsake

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  How you use the prompt is up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise.  If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.

The Inspiration: My Only Work Keepsake

I’m not one for keeping a lot of mementos around. but I’ve kept one hand-made card since the end of the last millennium, when I was teaching a self-esteem workshop at Metropolitan State University in Denver, Colorado.

Between the first and second class of the 16-hour workshop, I had to put my retired guide dog to sleep Obviously, I didn’t feel like doing anything, but the show must go on. I let them know at the start that I would tell them something only once, then move on and give them my very best possible class.

The Story: In Honor of Molly

“Everyone, I need to tell you something.”

All shuffling stopped as their attention riveted to me.

“This week, I had to put my dog, Molly to sleep.”

After lunch, they handed me a hand-made, signed card. This cherished gift is my only keepsake from any job I’ve ever had.

The Prettiest Girl | Flash Fiction from a Friday Fictioneers Photo Writing Prompt

Thanks for stopping by for another story! I’ve decided to write another story inspired by this week’s Friday Fictioneers photo prompt! This one has NOTHING to do with the big C19!

Flash Fiction

The Photo Prompt

PHOTO PROMPT © J Hardy Carroll

The Inspiration

One of the spirits I encountered as a psychic medium is a guy who had a love at first sight meeting with a girl in high school. They married and had several children together. Steve, this is YOUR story!

The Story: “The Prettiest Girl”

At the counter, Sarah bit into the giant cheeseburger.

Steve sat beside her. His eyes bugged. She’s the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen.

“What’re you looking at?”

Dropping his gaze and shifting on the stool, Steve answered, “Uh…nothin’.” He looked straight into her eyes. “I like a girl who isn’t afraid to eat in front of a boy.”

“Oh.” Sarah nudged her plate toward him. “Want a bite?”

He snatched a long fry. Twisting it around his finger, he asked, “Would you maybe wanna go to the dance Saturday?”

The jukebox played, “Let’s Go to the Hop.”

Sarah smiled. “Sure.”
