The Inspiration

Today’s photo brought me back to my roots in Chicago.

The Story: A Chicago Thing

Word count: 100

Genre: realistic fiction with characters from my paranormal novel They All Died Smiling,

Kassidy trudged along the snowy sidewalk. It’s sure be nice if people would shovel.

Walking along a residential street, she saw a table in a parking space. Had it not been snowing, she would have taken a photo of the oddity.

Amused, she noticed other furniture and sawhorses similarly marking cleared parking spots.

Must be a Chicago thing.

Swearing assaulted Kassidy’s ears. Just before the last corner, a man in an SUV hurled a sawhorse, smashing it to pieces. Still cussing a blue streak, he revved and parked.

Claire welcomed her inside. “I can’t wait to learn your cobbler recipe.”

People cleared snow from the parking place in front of their homes, then used couches or whatever furniture to “claim.” Not sure if they still do, but I’ve seen every sort of furniture used as a placeholder. And WOW what an uproar happened when someone “stole” the space they’d cleared! Thanks for reading,
