Description for my blind/visually impaired readers: This looks to me like a busy corner with shops and people.

The Inspiration

This picture transported me to the No Barriers Summit of 2019 in California, which was a harrowing event for me.

The Story: Endless Barriers Summit

No barriers? I wish.

For the wounded warriors, chair users, and deaf, yes. The team did everything possible to accommodate those disabled.

But I, blind traveling alone, spent the entire event panicked and confused. My guide dog and I trekked endless miles getting lost, hunting down sessions across the sprawling destination hotel complex. I cried and experienced countless anxiety attacks until finally settling in the right place.

I expected more of the renowned mountaineer founder, who’s totally blind. But all he had to do was plop his hand on someone’s shoulder and they’d take him wherever he needed to be.

  1. I get anxious enough in busy places, I can’t even imagine what it would be like if blind.
I’m in awe of one of the presenters of BBC’s Travel Show – he is blind, goes everywhere and does everything. Of course, he has a whole production team with him.
