Old School Millennial

Hi! Take a break from and PANICdemic and enjoy a short read. This one’s for Rochelle Wisoff-Fields’ Friday Fictioneers Blog Challenge for 27 March, based on a photo writing prompt.

This one features Kassidy and Julie from my paranormal novel They All Died Smiling plus Kass’ aunt and cousins, who are mentioned but don’t appear. This is a mundane…er…mainstream story from the world of a paranormal book. I’m calling it historical fiction of the 1990s.

If you’d like to read my books, you can find them anywhere you get your reads, or on my Amazon author page.

The Photo Prompt

PHOTO PROMPT © Jeff Arnold

Description (For my visually impaired/blind friends): What I see in this photo is an antique typewriter.

The Inspiration

The photo of an old typewriter made me think of learning to type in 6th grade. My character Kassidy grew up in a rural area in an old-school manner, even though she’s a millennial. She never had a computer until high school classes. She learned how to type, do shorthand, sew, and more all from her Aunt Beck.

The Story: Old School Millennial

by Ronda Del Boccio

Word Count: 100 words

Genre: Historical Fiction from the 1990s

I showed Julie some family photos. In one, Aunt Beck sat with a belly full of unborn baby and a toddler on her knee.

“OMG, that antique typewriter,” Julie exclaimed. “I wouldn’t even know how to type on it.”

“You had to push, but otherwise, it’s like a computer with no function keys.”

Julie rolled her eyes. “I know what one is, Kass, but how did people ever manage to type like that? What happened when you made a mistake?”

“White-Out or correction tape.”

“Of course, you’ve used one.”

“That’s the same machine on which she taught me to type.”

  1. I got to be part of the generation that progressed from typewriters to electric typewriters to word processors to computers, and all the improvements that have happened since my first computer! Exciting, and I LOVE my computer 🙂

  2. Dear Ronda,

I actually learned on an electric IBM. Very progressive in the day. My mom bought it for me because she was dead set on my learning to touch type. (i’m fair at it…but thank heaven for backspace keys).
    Love the story.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle
